In 2009, The Kate and Justin Rose Foundation teamed up with Blessings in a Backpack to help fight childhood hunger in the Orlando area, the Roses’ adopted home.
Blessings in a Backpack provides food for elementary school children across America who may otherwise have little or no food to eat on the weekends during the school year. Better test scores, improved reading skills, positive behavior, improved health and increased attendance have all been attributed to the success of this program. $100 feeds one child for the entire 38-week school year.
Justin states, “This program is very close to our hearts because Kate and I know Blessings in a Backpack fills a crucial void for children who might otherwise go hungry. I can’t expect to play good golf if I’m not properly nourished so how can we expect kids to go a full weekend with out enough to eat and then be able to focus on learning the next school week.”
Currently, Justin and Kate are feeding over 1600 children in 5 schools in the Orlando area. In 2011, Justin started the Birdies for Blessings campaign. For every birdie made, Justin will contribute $100 to Blessings in a Backpack.
Zurich has agreed to match every birdie that Justin makes as well. As a result, 2 children will be fed during the school year for every birdie made.
